Where does this information come from?
From the registry that runs the domain's extension. We query it live when you ask, and we show the reading date so you can judge its freshness yourself.
Why are some fields empty?
Registries do not all publish the same information, and many hide individual holders' details. An empty field means the registry did not disclose it, not that the data does not exist.
Is an expired domain free to take?
Not immediately. After expiry comes a period where the holder can still renew, then a redemption phase whose length depends on the extension. A past date signals an opportunity, never a certainty.
Is there a usage limit?
Yes, a reasonable number of checks per hour. Registries limit requests themselves, and we would rather stay on good terms with them so we can keep answering you.
What do you keep about the domain I type?
The domain name and the registry reading, with its date. That is what lets us answer you immediately next time instead of bothering the registry for an identical answer. Your IP address is not kept in the clear, only as a fingerprint, which serves only to spot abuse. The full reading, which can contain personal contact details, is never shown to an anonymous visitor.
